Oh goodness! Unless you're living under a rock, you know about the coronavirus or COVID-19. I will say that we are taking it serious here. Shawn's mom has multiple autoimmune disorders and we have several friends and family members in various stages of cancer treatments, so we are definitely social distancing.
Last night, before bed, Rylie spiked a fever. She has some body aches and chills. This morning her stomach was a bit upset. I ended up taking her to the doctor at 10:00 this morning where he tested her for the flu and strep. Both were negative. He's certain it's not COVID-19 as the upset stomach isn't a symptom, and outside of the fever she has no other symptoms that match. She just needs rest and fluids. Thankfully, if she was going to be sick, now is the time. School has been called out for at least two weeks, although I just took a break typing this to read an email from Ben's school's principal saying that Wednesday morning we need to bring him up to the school to pick up any personal items or musical instruments. He left his viola at school because his teacher was supposed to fix his bridge over spring break (which was last week) so he'll go pick it up then.
When we found out that school would be out for at least 2 weeks after a spring break of kids not fighting when we weren't in the middle of an activity, I decided we're going to work on school stuff and figure out how to get through this, with minimal fighting and losing our minds.
Today was day one and the morning was filled with me taking Rylie to the doctor. Ben, Sydney, and Scottie stayed home watching Netflix while Shawn was on calls in the bedroom.
When I got home, I got Rylie medicated and laying in bed with her iPad and some water, and started cooking bacon, and making late morning coffee. I set Ben, Sydney, and Scottie up at the kitchen table with the workbooks I ordered them from their grade levels and had them do some english language arts lessons. I made a brunch for everyone of leftover cornbread, over easy eggs, bacon, and clementines. Thankfully Rylie was able to keep it down and even better, the Tylenol was working and she was feeling better. So after lunch I set them all back at the table to do math in their workbooks. Rylie joined in and did a little english as well.
After a little while of math and in Rylie's case english too, we went down stairs for some Go Noodle time.
I let them each pick one. Ben picked a meditation based one which was really cool and different than the silly songs or dancing ones the girls did. Cleo liked messing with the kids when they would lay on the floor so I had to keep her entertained while they "melted" to the floor.
After they each picked a Go Noodle, we did read aloud time. They do this at the kids school where the teacher reads from a chapter book and then they talk about what they heard. At the end of the book, if it has a movie, they get to watch it. I decided that I would read to them from one of my favorites, Little Women, and when it's done we'll watch the movie or movies.
We read about 50 pages, talked about everyone's favorite characters and why, and then did more Go Noodles.
After they danced their sillies out, we got all cozy on the couch and took a little virtual tour through some of the Egyptian Antiquities section of the Louvre. We were able to screen share to the Apple TV for the Go Noodles and the virtual tour, so everyone could see and participate on the big TV. It was really fun. Also, the Louvre exhibit we were looking at sent us on several side adventures through Wikipedia and other places to learn a little more about what we were looking at, and all the different rituals and people.
After watching the tour, we watched Kevin Hart's Guide to Black History. He put a funny but incredibly educational spin on a lot of people we hadn't heard of before and few we had. It's definitely worth the watch.
Shawn made a deal with me that once the schools closed, he would quit going to the gym. He's had to get creative with his workouts. Thankfully we have the treadmill so running is easier.
We finished the educational day with a couple episodes of Story Bots for Rylie. She really loves that show.
Tonight, we ate a quick dinner and put kids to bed while Shawn did a fast run to Sprouts for milk and eggs. He's got a work meeting in Singapore tonight at 11:45. I've put away all the groceries and Shawn's taken out the trash and recycling. The kids have all been in bed sleeping for a bit now, and I'm ready to call it a night.
Tomorrow, Shawn's first call is at 8:00 so we'll be up decently early. I'd like to do breakfast with the kiddos and then have them work on their workbooks while I get dinner in the slow cooker. It's St. Patrick's Day, so we're having corned beef and cabbage. I'm going to try to do an even better job of a day in the life post tomorrow. Who knows how long we'll be stuck here. Shawn told the kids this will be a time in their lives they'll tell their children and grandchildren about. Quarantines like this sound like something from the movies. While we aren't technically quarantined, this social distancing and everything closing really do feel like quarantines.
